HEATHCOTE Health is sponsoring a La Trobe University Occupational Health student project called the Heathcote Parkrun Pilot.

The project is supported by Healthy Loddon Campaspe and fourth year students, Josh Christensen, Ben Williams and James Saliba are hoping to improve the health of the Heathcote and District community.

A survey to assess local interest is available on the Heathcote Health Facebook page and paper copies at Heathcote Health, Heathcote Community Health and At The Bar Fitness & Nutrition.

“We really appreciate the local input,” said Mr Williams, “and the help from our sponsors Dan Douglass and Michelle Chapman at Heathcote Health.

“Parkruns are a great way to improve fitness and participants don’t have to run.

“We participated in the Bendigo Botanical Gardens Parkrun on the weekend where there were more walkers than runners. Most of all, Parkrun is about social interaction.”

Heathcote health executive assistant Michelle Chapman said she was pleased with the response to the survey so far.

“With 67 responses in just five days, it is an indication of how popular a Parkrun for the Heathcote community could be,” Ms Chapman said. “From the survey results so far, 93 per cent of respondents said they were likely or very likely to participate.

“Many people are also interested in volunteering for Parkrun.”

There are currently 498 Parkrun events held throughout Australia every weekend.

Parkrun is a free, community event where participants can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate.

The parkrun distance for adults is five kilometres and they take place every Saturday morning.

The junior parkrun distance is two kilometres and is dedicated to four-to-14-year-olds and their families every Sunday morning.

Parkruns are designed to be positive, welcoming and inclusive. There is no time limit, and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome.

“If a Heathcote parkrun were to be established, it could become a social prescribing option for people requiring exercise and/or social connection,” said Ms Chapman.

“The survey is open until 22 July and any assistance residents can provide to the students will be greatly appreciated.”
