ONCE again, the community has pulled together with donations and support for the annual Heathcote Picnic in the Park.

The event is held every Australia Day in the shade of Barrack Reserve, coordinated by Heathcote RSL Sub-Branch and continues to grow in popularity each year.

Heathcote RSL Sub-Branch president Miles Humphrey said everyone is welcome to the community event.

“As Aussies, we have always been known for our laid-back, welcoming lifestyle and attitudes of a fair go for all,” said Mr Humphrey.

“Keen on the great outdoors, sport and recreation, we enjoy coming together for a barbie, or just kicking back with mates.

“It is our diverse and colourful history that has made us what we are today.

“Australia Day is time for us to celebrate winning the lottery of life.

“Being able to call ourselves Aussies, we truly believe that there is not a single element of our society that would be better off elsewhere.

Helen Burns and Bev Sharpe attend the picnic every year and always have a great day.

“Whilst we can and do improve, we really are the lucky country.”

Mr Humphrey said he believes Australia Day is a day to put aside any differences and join together to celebrate everything that is wonderful about our country.

“From our Indigenous heritage in the beginning, to the greatest single successful migration of peoples since Moses (the First Fleet) and all that followed, we have together created a nation that values democracy, rule of law, opportunity, freedom and a fair go for everyone.

“I hope everyone will come along and relax in the shade of the beautiful trees in Barrack Reserve to celebrate the day.

“Everyone is welcome.”

Picnic in the Park will be held from 10am to 2pm on Monday 26 January.

It will feature a sausage sizzle, ice cream, petting zoo, face painting, fairy floss, snow cones and live music. Everything is free.
