HEATHCOTE Police are calling for greater vigilance in locking up cars and homes.

The effort comes after an increase in break-ins and thefts in the area.

“It is a timely reminder not to be complacent,” said officer-in-charge at Heathcote Police Station, Sergeant Holly Lembke.

“Gone are the days of farmers and residents leaving their cars unlocked and keys in their vehicles overnight.

“There has been a number of opportunistic thefts in both Heathcote township and rural properties in the area.

“An increase in thefts of motor vehicles and burglary offences have been reported.

“I understand people in this area are too trusting when it comes to locking their homes, garages and vehicles.

“Everyone needs to be more cautious.”

Residents are also urged to report any suspicious behaviour.

“If you know something, please say something,” said Sergeant Lembke.
