THE Spanish word for party is Zumba and instructor Mel Andrew loves to incorporate as much fun as she can into her Zumba Gold sessions.

Zumba with Mel classes are held every Friday from 1pm to 2pm at the RSL Hall.

“It’s all about having fun and getting fit at the same time,” said Ms Andrew.

“I’m passionate about what I do and I love seeing people enjoy themselves.”

The classes are suitable for all ages with no previous experience necessary and no special attire required.

Zumba Gold is a modified version of Zumba and good for older adults.

“Participants wear comfortable clothes and I encourage lots of bright colours,” said Ms Andrew.

“The more flamboyant the better. I especially love the colours of the Spanish flag and always wear my colourful hat.”

Ms Andrew started Zumba two years ago, attending online classes due to COVID lockdowns.

“I enjoyed it so much and could see the benefits it could bring to others, especially older people who need to keep up their coordination and balance so they can live life to the full,” she said.

“Improving strength and boosting energy helps with everyday things like reaching to the top cupboard and hanging the washing out.

“Zumba is also a great cardio workout and stress reliever. Many people as they get older have hip problems and Zumba is all about hip movements which really help.

“I break down the movements so everyone can keep up and every class is like a dance party. We all have fun.”

Ms Andrew also runs other classes in the Bendigo area and is qualified in Zumba Fitness, Zumba Gold, Chair and Aqua Zumba. She hopes to start Aqua Zumba classes in the near future.
