Rally drivers start their engines

FEELING excited and a little apprehensive, father and son Shitbox Rally duo Ken and Jared Puxley set off for Mildura last Friday for the start of their journey.

The pair, named Team Gorgeous Georgios, joined 500 others raising money for cancer research.

“The wet start is appropriate,” said Ken Puxley.

“We were advised two days ago that the route has been changed due to extreme wet weather conditions.

“They have had more rain at Birdsville than they’ve seen in a long time.

“At first, they graded a new track through farmland but even that became impassable so now we will be spending more time on sealed roads.

“It is exciting to be setting off but we are also a bit apprehensive, not knowing what is ahead and hoping our car will make it.”

The Puxleys praised the rally organisers for their attention to detail and safety concerns.

“We travel in buddy groups,” said Jared Puxley.

“If one team stops, we all stop until we can get back on the road.

“As well as raising money for cancer research, organisers have made it lots of fun with dress up days and other activities.”

The Puxleys were inspired to join the fundraising event after losing close friend George in 2023.

“George was one of a kind, so in his memory and in honour of so many other brave warriors we are hoping to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

“We are very grateful to our sponsors Honey and Whiskey Photography, Bendigo Forklift Hire and Service, and Heathcote Mitre 10, and everyone has donated.

“So far, we have raised $6550.

“Our goal is $10,000 and we welcome any donations to support this worthy cause.”

The Puxleys, and the other teams, will conclude the rally in Townsville today.
