LOCALS have rallied to the call for more performers at the Lions Club Community Carols after organisers feared there were not enough acts to hold the event.

Lions Club members moved to cancel the carols recently after they decided it would not be feasible to go ahead with the limited responses received from a request for performers.

“Only four acts initially responded then overnight we had a list of more than 25, once people realised we would have to cancel,” said club member Lorraine Spiers.

“We were disappointed after yearlong preparations for the event, as risk assessments, paperwork and negotiations with council start months in advance.

“Fortunately, we now have enough performers to go ahead.”

Among the performers this year will be the Heathcote Ukulele Group, the Marist Brass Band from Bendigo, local schools, and kindergarten.

Music teacher Mariah McCarthy will be performing as well as many of her students, and other individual performers.

“It is extremely heartening to see our community rally around in support of our Heathcote Lions Club and Community Carols,” said Tania Malavisi, who has been assisting the Lions Club.

“They have pulled together a solid list of performers willing to share their talents and festive spirit.

“It sometimes takes the risk of losing something truly unique and close to our hearts to realise exactly what an essential part of our community spirit and identity it is.

“I would like to thank the Heathcote Lions Club and their volunteers for their generosity of spirit and good will in ensuring our carols go ahead again this year.”

The Community Carols will be held tomorrow at Barrack Reserve from 6.30pm.
