DESPITE the chilly weather, young players flocked to Heathcote Football Netball Club’s recent junior registration day.

There was an enthusiastic turn-out for the junior clinics and senior players put future footballers and netballers through their paces.

Mid-morning rain signalled the end of play for the youngsters and the hardier seniors took to the court and oval for some pre-season training.

Club president Rebecca Dickinson said she was hoping to get more children involved in the club this year.

“I’m very happy with today,” she said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been up and about across the whole board.

“I think we are going in the right direction we’ve got solid coaches and playing groups, and we’ve got people wanting to be at Heathcote which is great.”

Ms Dickinson said the COVID pandemic had a huge impact on the club.

“People walked away from playing and found other interests,” she said. “But they’re starting to come back now.

“Last year was harder, this year they seem to be coming back in.”

Ms Dickinson said Heathcote normally fielded an under 12 football side, but they were hoping for enough players for under 10s as well.

“Netball run a bit differently,” she said. “In the netball we have 11 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under, 17 and under.”
