HEATHCOTE’S gardeners have been set a challenge; to grow big, beautiful zucchinis for the inaugural Heathcote Zucchini Festival.

The festival will be held on Sunday 2 March at the community house.

“The idea for the festival arose out of the growing and sharing of veggies that happens here in Heathcote,” said co-organiser Amanda Collins.

“By March, it’s usually quite difficult to give zucchinis away as everybody has them.

“We just thought, why not celebrate that?”

Ms Collins and keen gardener Mel Matyson dreamed up the idea for the festival over coffee one morning.

Locals are urged to plant zucchinis now ready for the inaugural Heathcote Zucchini Festival to be held on Sunday 2 March.

There will be fun competitions like the biggest home-grown zucchini and the best zucchini cakes.

Kids’ activities and cooking classes will also happen on the day.

“With help from community house, and sponsorship from Mandalay, there will be plenty of zucchini silliness for adults and children to get involved in,” said Ms Collins.

“The full program of workshops and competitions should be announced in Late January.”
