NEW citizens were welcomed, and Mitchell Shire Community Award recipients announced at a ceremony held at Wallan Neighbourhood House on Australia Day.

Mayor Cr Louise Bannister officiated at the ceremony.

Sergio Prado-Arneuro was awarded Citizen of the Year, Kirsten Boehm, Young Citizen of the Year.

Community Event of the Year was the Seymour Show ‘n’ Shine, while Tyaak Cemetery Trust was the Community Group of the Year.

Other awards went to, Mitchell Rangers Soccer Club as Access and Inclusion Champion, Peter Baxter for Sports Person of the Year, and Rhonda Coates for Arts and/or Culture Person of the Year.

Commendation Awards were given to Carolyn Atkinson and Margrette Inness.

“In this year’s awards, we celebrate the incredible diversity of individuals who selflessly contribute to our community,” said Cr Bannister.

“These remarkable people come from diverse backgrounds, often working behind the scenes to uplift and enhance the lives of their fellow community members.

“It is a day to recognise the profound impact they have and appreciate how our community would be fundamentally different without their dedication.

“It is also a chance to celebrate the achievement of our newest citizens.

“It is a privilege to share this success with them.”
