Showing what they’re made of

MORE than fifteen years ago, Heathcote local Peter Miller began making custom trailers and truck bodies for use as carnival alley attractions at shows and fates nationwide.

Since in he’s gone on to build a reputation for high quality workmanship that’s drawn from this fifth-generation showman and industry knowledge.

A quiet, modest man, he suggested his father, Charlie Miller, tell the story.

“Our family was based in Brisbane and travelled to shows all over the country,” said Charlie, who works also works on the trailers.

“As well as working at shows, my father built rides back when I was a boy that are still operating today.

“He was well known for the quality of his work and inspectors were quick to sign off on the finished product.

“They had to be good, you can’t risk public safety. Peter and I inherited Dad’s ethic and we like to make sure everything is spot on before leaving the factory.”

The Millers moved to Heathcote 20 years ago after a series of coincidences.

“The road through Heathcote takes you everywhere,” said Charlie. “No matter which shows we were going to, we passed through.

“Then, three times in a row we had to stop. Minor breakdowns and flat tyres. My wife found us a home here although it was a few more years before we settled.”

The Millers recently completed a project for Nadine Lakey from Toolleen.

Built onto the back of a truck it has provision for selling showbags, sleeping quarters and kitchen facilities.

“This is a dream build made possible by Peter Miller’s Custom Trailers,” said Ms Lakey. “It lights up and has space for our showbags, novelties and toys.

“We will be attending shows in February and continue to work and travel Australia until September.

“My family has been travelling to shows for more than 45 years and this new truck brought a dream to reality.

“Peter and Charlie have been very accommodating and understanding of the particular details I asked for. Nothing is too much trouble.”

The Millers have already started on their next project and the next generation is already showing interest in show life.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my kids and grandkids,” said Charlie. “And it’s great they will be following in the family traditions.”
