AS an innovative way to use up leftover yarn from other projects, Heathcote’s Chatty Community Crafting group got out their crochet hooks and knitting needles and began making blankets.

Within weeks they had produced several blankets which were then given to RFDS volunteer Ralph Edgell who shared them among clients travelling with the RFDS to medical appointments.

“It is wonderful to see people’s faces light up when they are given a blanket,” said Mr Edgell. “It’s like getting a hug from the community.

“Some leave them in the RFDS cars to be used by patients on their way to appointments while others take them home to use on their beds or on their laps when sitting in chairs.

“Being winter, it was perfect timing.”

RFDS volunteer liaison officer Melodie Thompson said the blankets have become so popular that some have been sent to RFDS offices at Rochester, Cobram and Numurkah.

“It is a wonderful initiative, and we are very grateful,” she said.

“They are absolutely super in this very cold weather.”

Di Coren from the Chatty Community Crafting group said members often had leftover yarn from projects and decided to use them to make blankets.

“We asked staff at community house to find someone who could use them,” she said.

“Ralph, a volunteer at community house as well as with the RFDS, was pleased to help.

“We were all thrilled to find out that people liked them so much they wanted to keep them.

“As well as our leftover yarn, people have also donated yarn, and we are all enjoying making the blankets.
