NOW that summer has finally arrived, Heathcote Fire Brigade is urging residents to be vigilant and keep themselves and their properties safe.

Fire restrictions are now in force across Victoria.

“As we head into the summer months, now is a good time to finish any last-minute property preparation,” community safety coordinator Evan Pritchard said.

“While it’s too late for burn-offs, it’s still a good idea to clean up around your property and remove any loose leaves and tree debris as well as keeping grass down to no more than five centimetres around your property.

“It’s also good to remember that the City of Greater Bendigo recycling centres all accept green garden waste free of charge.

“A hotter than average summer is predicted and with that comes a heightened risk of bushfires over large parts of Victoria.

“Residents need to make sure they have up-to-date fire and evacuation plans and understand the Fire Danger Rating System.

“You can download the Vic Emergency app to your phone to keep updated on any incidents in your area.

“Bushfire planning and property preparation tips are all available at cfa.vic.gov.au.”
