WITH extreme temperatures again forecast for this weekend, Heathcote Fire Brigade members are reminding residents to be vigilant and stay informed using the Vic Emergency App.
Under catastrophic conditions two weeks ago, the brigade sent strike teams to the bushfire in Harcourt and other fires across the state.
“Some of our volunteers took three shifts – a huge commitment,” Heathcote Fire Brigade captain Carl Watkins said.
“More than 4000 hectares was burnt, 54 dwellings lost and another 18 damaged.
“There were also huge stock losses.”
Mr Watkins assured Heathcote residents that while one truck goes out to assist at other fires, as part of a reciprocal arrangement there is always one truck available in the area.
“There is always a crew here and the other truck stays close to home in case of emergency,” he said.

“We had 15-20 volunteers here over that weekend ready to go if called out.”
Mr Watkins praised the local community and businesses for their generosity in donating food, drink and other supplies over the weekend.
“Amid the angst during such conditions, people like to be able to do something to help and it is very much appreciated by all of us,” he said.
“There was so much food brought in for the crews waiting at the station and much of it went out to the crews at Sutton Grange.
“We are fortunate to have meals and snacks provided in such situations but the extra is always appreciated.
“It helps to keep you going.”
Heathcote Fire Brigade is planning a Safety Expo tomorrow (Saturday 24 January) at the community house.
“The idea arose from our concern that people didn’t know what to do because they don’t have a plan and so were seeking advice from Facebook,” recruitment officer Peter Duncan said.
“Some of that advice was wrong and dangerous.
“We want to show people where the accurate information can be found and how to decide how that will affect them so they can make good and early decisions.
“With another hot spell coming up, it’s still not too late to make a good fire plan. But ‘too late’ is not far away.”
The expo will host stalls for the CFA, the community house, SES, City of Greater Bendigo and Heathcote Health.
“There will be advice on Emergency Plans and residents can book in for property advice visits,” Mr Duncan said.
“Anyone interested in volunteering will also be able to learn what is involved.”
The Safety Expo will be held from 10am to 1pm and everyone is welcome.
