Sweet creations for Weekly’s celebration

TO coincide with The Australian Women’s Weekly ninetieth birthday exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery something sugary is on offer.

A Sweet Treat Trail has been created with local businesses to bring special menu items inspired by the publication’s famous children’s birthday cake book.

City of Greater Bendigo’s manager of tourism and major events marketing Glen Harvey said the trail is aimed at engaging visitors in town for the exhibition.

“What we’ve done is gone out and asked businesses to come up with their own creation inspired by the cookbook,” he said.

“It can be used as a trail for when visitors come here over the next three months to get them to discover Bendigo.

“It’s about getting people to get out and explore. Spend money on local businesses, retail and hospitality why they’re here.”

Treacy Patisserie owner Daniel Troy Treacy is one of the 13 local businesses taking part and said he was excited to come up with some recipes inspired by the cookbook.

“This is our modern interpretation of the Dolly Varden cake, the classic cake you see in that cookbook,” he said.

“We repurposed it so it could be modernised and suit our brand as a fine patisserie.

“In this cake specifically, we recreated the dolly itself with the cookie coated in gold. Then the actual body of the cake consists of multiple red berries, yuzu, tonka beans, vanilla, and lime.

“We’re going to recreate and do different cakes every couple of weeks. We’ve bought the books and then we’re just going to flick through each week and see what inspires us and recreate it.”
