THE team at The McIvor Times has come away from the recent Victorian Country Press Association with two awards for photography.

Both nods came in the circulation under 2000 class, where Peter Weaving won for a front-page sports image ahead of this year’s Dennis Gleeson MND Superchallenge.

Steve Womersley’s winning image of a boat on fire at the Eppalock Gold Cup came first in the news photography division.

Judged by News Limited photographer Nigel Hallett, he said Womersley’s image was more than being in the right place at the right time.

“To be on the scene of a fire when the flames are still burning for a photographer at a news event can be quite rare,” Hallett said.

“To be in the right place at the right time is also quite rare. So to capture this photo in a moment of panic is very well done and a much deserved winner.”

Steve Womersley’s award winning news photo was captured at the Eppalock Gold Cup when a boat caught fire, and was published in the 13 January edition.

Weaving’s image, titled Roll Up! was judged by Julie Kimpton from Nikon.

“Great low angle of view,” she said. “The composition and lighting is really strong and love the clean background. Well done.”

Editor of the McIvor Times, Alistair Finlay said the awards were validation of the investment the Times News Group made in photography and the community publication.

“Strong images are a key part of a great newspaper,” he said. “They are more then pretty pictures, they help tell the story, add value to the experience, and draw the reader though the page.

“This isn’t the first time Peter and Steve have won awards with us and we’re lucky to get to work with highly talented professionals like them.

“It’s gratifying to be bale to tell this community’s stories in words and pictures and I’m thankful the people of Heathcote and its surrounds allow us to do so.”
