BENDIGO Legacy president Don Kent came to Heathcote last week to present Tim Day with a Certificate of Appreciation for his fundraising efforts.

Mr Day walked the Kokoda Trail last year with his cousin Richard and raised more than $8000 for Legacy.

For Mr Day it was the realisation of a life-held dream to walk in the footsteps of his late grandfather Edward Kenna.

Before embarking on the trek, Mr Day said he wanted to do his grandfather proud and raise some money to support other servicemen, women and their families through Legacy.

“Pop received the highest order of bravery for his efforts in New Guinea, putting himself in the line of fire to combat armed forces and advance the Australian 2/4 battalion,” he said.

“He always said the medal was not for him but for everyone who served.

“He faced so many challenges throughout his time in New Guinea and on his return from World War Two, showing incredible bravery and yet was the most humble man you could ever meet.

“I hope to do him proud by completing this trek and raise some money to support other servicemen, women and their families through Legacy.”

Mr Kent said he was thrilled to present the certificate.

“Tim’s efforts were fantastic,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe it when we received more than $8000.

“It will go a long way towards helping the veteran community and his grandfather would indeed be very proud.”

A modest Mr Day said he was overwhelmed by all the support he received before, during and after his trip to New Guinea.

“I can’t thank everyone enough,” he said.

“The staff and members of At the Bar Fitness, everyone at Fosterville Mine and the local community all helped to make this happen.

“I am really glad I was able to do this in Pop’s memory and help deserving veterans.”
