THREE thousand tulips were handed out to commuters at Southern Cross Station last weekend to promote tourism in Bendigo.

The City of Greater Bendigo was commissioned for the marking push by the Department of Transport and Planning, who supplied the tulips.

Glenn Harvey, marketing manager at Bendigo Tourism said the effort was to draw people’s attention to the City’s spring offerings and encourage visitors to take the train.

“V/Line is such an affordable way at the moment, and to have the displays on, it really showcases the city,” he said.

“It’s a great way to get people up to see Bendigo to explore, it removes a lot of barriers.”

In addition to the tulip giveaway, a replica of the spring Bendigo sign on display at the Piazza was installed at Southern Cross Station.

The sign, which was designed by local graphic designer Steve Stanley of Modart, will be moved to Bendigo Airport in the coming weeks where it will greet passengers for the remainder of spring.

Mr Harvey said the City had been expanding their promotion of Bloom events to different audiences to get the message out as wide possible.

“The fact that it’s free as well, so it’s about inclusivity and accessibility to really encourage people from out of town, but also locals and their visiting friends and family,” he said.

“We really wanted to have something for all.”
