Veteran vehicles visit historic Heathcote
MEMBERS of the Veteran Car Club of Victoria came to Heathcote on Saturday to visit the historical society museum and gaol.
Forty-five pre-1918 cars, motorbikes and fire engines lined Camp Street.
“We’ve had small bus tours before but this is the biggest group we have had visiting the museum,” curator Elizabeth Murfitt said.
“It is a great opportunity to showcase Heathcote’s wonderful history, including the gold and timber industries.”
The vehicles were all made before the end of the First World War in 1918. Some were driven, others were on trailers.
Members took turns in small groups to tour the museum and historical society office.
“We have several rallies through the year,” Veteran Car Club member Liz Donald said.
“I have been participating with my family since I was about five years old.
“There are all ages in the club with the youngest at the moment just 18 months old.
“We especially enjoy touring country areas and towns.
“The people are very understanding, realising that our vehicles are a bit slower at braking and starting off again.
“We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the museum and learning about Heathcote’s history.”
