Hawks, Bloods aim to stay top

EAGLEHAWK and South Bendigo will aim to roll into the Christmas-New Year break leading their divisions after Saturday’s round of Athletics Victoria Shield League action.

It’s another Nitro round as athletes contest field and track disciplines from 2pm at the Retreat Road complex in Flora Hill.

Track action begins with sprint hurdles and will be followed by 1000, 150, 3000 and 5000 metres.

There will be various flights of shot put, javelin, triple jump and pole vault.

After six rounds Eaglehawk has scored 56 points to be number one in premier division from Diamond Valley on 47, Essendon with 36, and Western Athletics with 33.

The Powerplay in which clubs double their points tally for their selected round has been used by Eaglehawk and Western.

High scorers for the Hawks include Dave and Daniel Chisholm, Jorja Morrison, Alyssa and William Beaton, Isabella Noonan, Cameron Greenwood and Cooper Richardson.

It’s a close duel in division two as South Bendigo and Keilor St Bernards lead the way on 42 and 40 points from Nunawading with 36, and Chiwell on 34.

Key members of South’s squad include Kai Norton, Rhys Hansen, Emma Berg, Carol Coad, Joan Self, Trudy Haines and Tyler Fynch.

Bendigo Harriers is in the relegation zone in division two and starts this round 13 points behind eighth-placed Mornington.

A tally of 46 points has Bendigo University in fourth place in division five.

It’s top three who earn promotion with Old Scotch on 71, Whittlesea at 54, and South Coast on 50, leading the race in the 12-round season.
