Lucky sevens get the win!

HEATHCOTE Bowling Club’s Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Bowls Region Division 3 Saturday Pennant squad travelled to play second placed Strathfieldsaye last weekend and they struggled all day, going down by forty-one shots.

The final score line was Heathcote 57 – Strathfieldsaye 98.

John McGillivray’s rink made a poor start losing the first six and trailed by 14 shots after 10 ends. His team lost only for more ends but went down by seven shots for a 14-21 result to L Cahdon.

Bill Gardiner’s group also struggled early and was down by 10 shots after 11 ends, with his team winning only three more ends to lose by 16 shots with a 15 to 31 score line to T Featherstone.

Maurine Lee’s foursome faired better with an even first to be down by two shots by the 14th end. Lee’s team the struggled losing the next five ends but won the last two to go down by 3 shots. Final result: Lee 16 – G Etherton 19.

Lastly Chris Morcom made a slow start to trail by 11 shots at the 12th end, subsequently ends were then shared but the team lost by 15 shots – 12 to 27 to T Probert.

Next week Heathcote’s Division 3 squad hosts North Bendigo at Heathcote.

As it was, North Bendigo’s Division 7 side was in town to take on Heathcote on Saturday and the visitors ended up on the bad side of 27-shot defeat.

Final scores were Heathcote 73 to North Bendigo’s 46 in a two-out-of-three rinks up effort.

Barry Cail made an even start with only a shot the difference after 12 ends. Barry’s team then only lost three further ends to record a 13-shot win, 25 to 12 over D Henson.

Tony Leahy also had an even start with scores level on the 10th end. The game remained close, but Leahy’s team lost the last end to go down by four shots, 20 to 24 against T Lee.

The Lorraine Speirs skipped side continued their winning ways, making a good start and taking the first seven ends to lead by 14 shots. Her team lost only five more ends to win by 18 shots, 28 to 10 over J Cashen.

Next Saturday Heathcote’s sevens are on the road at Bendigo East.

Midweek Pennant Results.

In Midweek action, Heathcote played top side Bendigo East at Heathcote in cold and windy conditions on Monday.

In a close game Heathcote lost the last end to go down by only three shots, 51 to 54.

Again, it was Lorraine Speirs who held their own, winning the first three ends to by 11 shots after 12. Despite losing the last three changes Speirs’ team held onto to win by seven shots with a 24 to 17 margin over J Hoffman.

Dot Cutajar rink won the first five ends but scores were level by the 12th. The game remained close, but her team lost the last to lose by a shot, in a tight 14 to 15 decision against S. Vowles

Eileen O’Brien’s team had an even start with only two shots the difference after 12. O’Brien’s team then struggled winning only three more ends and went onto lose by nine shots in a 13 to 22 final score against C. McKean.

Next Monday Heathcote heads to Kangaroo Flat.

Social Bowls on Wednesday, 30 November saw 17 bowlers play three games of pairs and triples in fine and warm conditions.

Top rollers were Richard Edwards and Ralph Scott on two wins, 34 points, +15 shots.

Close behind were runners up were Eileen O’Brien, John Hutson and Daniel Fitton on two wins, 34 points, +11 shots and Dot Cutajar and Graeme Vowles on two wins, 30 points, +5 shots.
