Saints on rebound from defeat
STUNG by a loss to the fifth-placed Bendigo team, Heathcote is back on home turf for Saturday’s Division Three match in the Bendigo leg of Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields bowls.
The Saints will take on Golden Square in a crucial contest from 1.30pm in the final round before the Christmas-New Year break.
A loss at Bendigo put Heathcote to the second rung on the ladder.
The Bill Gardiner-skipped rink scored a 23-17 win at Bendigo, while Adam Luxford fought on for an 18-all draw.
Maurice Lee was beaten by 10 shots and Chris Morcom by 13 as the Royals ruled, 83-66.
In Division Six, Heathcote will aim to follow up a great win against the ladder-leading by taking the points at Castlemaine.
The Saints marked a 23-shot win against Inglewood and moved to third place in the premiership race.
All of Heathcote’s rinks won against the Woodies.
Grant Baker by 10 shots, Brian Berger clinched a 25-24 victory, and Brian Taylor won by 12 shots.
Five shots on the 10th end gave Baker an eight-shot lead.
Beaten on the opening eight ends, Berger was down by 15 shots.
From there the Saints were beaten on just three more ends and won the final end by four to clinch a dramatic victory.
Taylor’s team was level after the 9th and 13th ends.
Six shots on the 16th and victory on the last two ends sealed victory.
In Midweek Pennant, Heathcote outpointed the second-placed Castlemaine by 29 shots in Monday’s Division Two match.
The Saints were in hot form at home to record a 70-41 victory.
Dot Cutajar led by six shots after 15 ends on the way to a 17-14 result.
Eileen O’Brien’s rink led by 13 shots after 14 ends and took the points, 29-10.
From 10 shots after five ends, Lorraine Speirs fought back brilliantly to claim a 24-17 victory.
