Saints wary of swooping Magpies

HEATHCOTE will be wary of being swooped by the Castlemaine mischief of Magpies in tomorrow’s (Saturday, January 18) ninth round of division three matches in the Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields weekend pennant bowls.

The Saints and Magpies resume their seasons after an extended break for Christmas and New Year.

The ladder-leading Heathcote heads down the highway to play on Castlemaine’s greens from 1.30pm.

After a run of six consecutive wins, Heathcote was outbowled by South Bendigo in round eight.

When Heathcote and Castlemaine met in round two it was the Saints who 17-89 to 1-64 at home.

The Saints go into this round leading the premership race on 110 points and plus 133 shots.

Next best are Woodbury 78, +43; Castlemaine 78, +35; and Golden Square 74, -33.

Leading players for Heathcote have been Chris Morcom, Greg Speirs and Eileen O’Brien on plus 62 shots.

The Saints also have Glenn Saunders, Bill Gardiner, Rodney Bond and David Thomas in great form.

Players to watch for the Magpies include Dean Cameron, Pam Hunter and Les Carlin.

In division six, Heathcote is at home against Strathfieldsaye.

A close clash in round two went Strathfieldsaye’s way, 14-62 to 2-59.

Second of the Saints’ wins for season was at Eaglehawk by 13 shots rolling into Christmas-New Year break

Lorraine Speirs and Brian Berger won by 10 and six shots

In midweek pennant, Heathcote will play at Kangaroo Flat next Monday from 10am.

The Saints won the round five showdown with the Roos at Heathcote, 14-65 to 2-44.
