Sevens make it two in a row
HEATHCOTE Bowling Club’s Division Three side in the Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Bowls Region Saturday Pennant comp took on North Bendigo at home last weekend,
In warm conditions and after an even game Heathcote lost the last few ends to go down by only 10 shots, 67 to 77.
Maurice Lee’s group made an even start with scores level after six ends. The game remained close with scores level again on the 18th but Lee’s team lost two of the last three changes to go down by two, 16 to J Hasty’s 18.
John McGillivray won the first four ends but scores were level by the 13th. Scores were level again at the 19th McGillivray’s rink dropped the next two to lose by three shots and a final score line of 15 to D Taig’s 18.
Chris Morcom started well and led by five after eight. Morcom’s team maintained a six-shot lead by the 16th end but lost the next four for a draw, 17 all to J Turley.
Finally, Bill Gardiner had an even start with scores level on the 8th. The game remained close and Gardiner’s foursome was down by one but dropped the last end to lose by five shots. 19 to 24 to J Rooke.
The squad currently sits sixth on the ladder with two wins and five losses and next Saturday Heathcote travel to Bendigo to take on last placed Bendigo.
Meanwhile, the Division 7 squad was on the road at Bendigo East, where in an even contest Heathcote held onto win by two shots, 53 to 51.
It was the team’s second win in a row and put the sevens into fifth on the ladder, five points behind fourth placed Bendigo East.
Denis Kilner started slowly losing the first four ends and trailed by nine shots by the 10th. Kilner’s team lifted but lost the last end to go down by only four shots, 15 to 19 to T Costello.
Barry Cail’s rink did the damage and made a good start to lead by 12 shots after eight ends. Despite losing the last four changes, Cail’s team held onto win by a 12-shot margin, 26 to 14 over C Washington.
Lorraine Speirs made an even start with scores level by the sixth. Speirs’ squad then struggled but won the last two ends to lose by six shots, 12 to 18 to C Judd.
Round eight this Saturday will see Heathcote welcome Bendigo VRI to town.
In Midweek Division Two Pennant action Heathcote was in the road in cold and windy conditions, where Kangaroo Flat proved too strong winning by 22 shots, 42 to 64.
Eileen O’Brien’s team started slowly and trailed by 11 shots after eight ends. Despite winning the last three the team went down by 13 shots, 13 to D Densley’s 26.
Dot Cutajar’s squad lost the first five ends but fought back to level the scores on the 10th, going into win the last three and lose by only 4 shots, 16 to K Packer’s 20.
Finally, Lorraine Speirs made an even start with scores level by the 11th. The game remained close but Spiers’ team lost two of the last three to go down by five shots, 13 to 18 by J McHugh.
The Midweek Division two side sits eighth on the latter with a one and five winning record.
Finally in social bowls on Wednesday, December, 14 bowlers played three games of pairs and triples.
The winners were Greg Speirs and Steph Veyrinas with three wins, 44 points at +11 shots.
Runners up were Chris Morcom and Denis Kilner on two wins and a draw, 37 points and +16 shots.
