DEPUTY Premier Jacinta Allan has urged fans to join the Bendigo Spirit’s journey across the 2023-24 Women’s National Basketball League action.

At last week’s season launch in Red Energy Arena, Spirit’s number one ticket-holder and long-time basketball fan said the club played an important role in the community.

“Whether it be as a member, sponsor, volunteer, or just being courtside for a match or more, this can be a great experience,” Ms Allan said.

“You can be watching your own Bendigo-based superstars competing with superstars from across the country in your own backyard.

“It’s an amazing opportunity, not just a pathway for young players, but for fans to watch elite sport in a regional centre/”

Spirit is in the second of a 10-year deal with Sports Entertainment Group.

SEN chief Craig Hutchison was at the season launch and said he believes Spirit can be a strong contender for the championship.

Last season the WNBL broke attendance records and club memberships grew at a strong rate, while games were telecast nationally showcasing talent and the city.

“At Spirit it’s not just about being a great team to watch, but having a great experience,” Hutchison said.

Spirit will be aiming to mark its first play-offs appearance in nine years.

The club’s lead-up included matches in South Korea, but not all of the squad was there for a club first.

On-court the Spirit will again be led by Kelsey Griffin and Kelly Wilson who are four-time WNBL champions.

Two of those play-off victories were with Bendigo Spirit in 2013 and 2014.

Wilson was the first to reach 400-games in WNBL history and her love of basketball has not waned as she played a key role in the Bendigo Braves unbeaten run to this season’s NBL1 championship.

The brilliant guard and Griffin are hungry for more success.

“I take a lot of pride in wearing the Bendigo singlet, whether it be Braves or Spirit,” said Wilson.

For Griffin, Bendigo has played a big part in her life.

“Bendigo is near and dear to my heart. It’s a place I stumbled across in my early 20s and a city and basketball club I am rapt to represent,” she said.

Newcomers to the Spirit squad coached by Kennedy Kereama include Ruth Davis, Mehryn Kraker and New Zealand star Esra McGoldrick.

Spirit’s season tips off at Red Energy Arena on 4 November against reigning champions Townsville Fire.
