{"id":100209,"date":"2025-07-09T13:22:04","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T03:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/its-a-massive-honour-interleague-medal-recognition-for-oconnell\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T13:22:04","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T03:22:04","slug":"its-a-massive-honour-interleague-medal-recognition-for-oconnell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/sport\/its-a-massive-honour-interleague-medal-recognition-for-oconnell\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s a massive honour&#8217;: Interleague medal recognition for O&#8217;Connell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bendigo Football Netball League will celebrate one of its greats this weekend with the introduction of the Robert O\u2019Connell Medal, to be awarded to the best on ground in Sunday\u2019s under-19 interleague match against the Victorian Amateur Football Association.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connell, a BFNL <a href=\"https:\/\/bendigotimes.com.au\/afl-hall-of-fame-honour-for-local-legend\/\">Hall of Famer<\/a>, played more than 250 games with <a href=\"https:\/\/bendigotimes.com.au\/bfnl-grand-final-fixture-confirmed\/\">Golden Square<\/a> and Eaglehawk during the 1970s and 80s. His decorated career includes five premierships, 16 interleague appearances and selection for Victoria Country in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Affectionately known as \u2018Ninga\u2019, O\u2019Connell said it was a \u201cmassive honour\u201d to have a medal named after him.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/07\/oconnell_58066.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"459\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BFNL Hall of Famer Robert O\u2019Connell with the medal named in his honour, to be presented to the played judged best on ground in this weekend\u2019s under-19 interleague clash against the VAFA at the QEO. Picture courtesy of BFNL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was involved with interleague for many years and to be back involved in this way is very special for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterleague football is important for all involved and particularly the players. They are competing against the best of the best from other leagues which helps bring the best out in everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connell, who was named in the BFNL\u2019s 80s Team of the Decade and captained Eaglehawk\u2019s Team of the Century, was inducted into the league\u2019s Hall of Fame in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his interleague days, he fondly recalled the many overnight trips for away games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe comradery we developed on those overnight trips is something that lasts with you forever,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of us are still mates today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bendigotimes.com.au\/bfnl-under-18s-head-to-ballarat-for-championships\/\">under-19 side<\/a> clash will kick off at 11.30am at the Queen Elizabeth Oval. O\u2019Connell will present the first medal to the standout BFNL player. The best on ground in the senior match at 2.30pm will be awarded the Derrick Filo Medal.<\/p>\n<p>BFNL manager Tom King thanked O\u2019Connell and his family for embracing the honour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to celebrating Robert\u2019s legacy with this medal for many years to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The under-19 side will be coached by Kangaroo Flat\u2019s Jason Stevens, with Gisborne\u2019s James Gray to captain.
