{"id":100409,"date":"2025-07-25T14:20:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T04:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/broadford-locks-in-former-afl-star-as-coach\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T14:30:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T04:30:18","slug":"broadford-locks-in-former-afl-star-as-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/sport\/broadford-locks-in-former-afl-star-as-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Broadford locks in former AFL star as coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE first piece of the puzzle for Broadford Football Netball Club&#8217;s anticipated entry into the Bendigo Football Netball League in 2026 is in place following the announcement of former AFL Hawthorn and North Melbourne star Nathan Thompson as senior coach.<\/p>\n<p>Broadford FNC unveiled Thompson as its new leader on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The club immediately hailed his appointment as a landmark moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith football returning from recess and a fresh chapter beginning in a new league, there is no better person to lead us into this exciting era than Nathan,\u201d said club president Bonnie Cavanagh-Welch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis football experience, combined with his passion for developing young talent and creating a strong, inclusive, community-first culture, aligns perfectly with the values of the Broadford Football Netball Club.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/07\/nt_15893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"459\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathan Thompson is excited to be returning to the BFNL, this time as senior coach of the league&#8217;s new kids on the block Broadford.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA true community-first leader, Nathan\u2019s values align perfectly with our club\u2019s vision &#8211; rebuild, reconnect, and reach our full potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to welcome someone of his calibre and character. This is a major step forward as we reignite our football program and strengthen our community foundations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson played more than 170 games with the Hawks and Kangaroos and was twice crowned as the leading goalkicker at both clubs.<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year-old is no stranger to the BFNL, having played for and coached his original club Kyneton.<\/p>\n<p>He also served as the Tigers\u2019 football manager and under-18s coach.<\/p>\n<p>While Kyneton departed the BFNL for the Riddell District league at the end of the 2023 season, helping open the gate for Broadford\u2019s arrival, the Kangaroos are aiming to compete in the league for the first time in 2026 following two years in recess.<\/p>\n<p>The club played in the Riddell District league until 2019 before it joined the Outer East Football Netball League.<\/p>\n<p>The Kangaroos had previously played in the Heathcote District league.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said he was excited by the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity to help rebuild and grow a proud club, surrounded by passionate people, is something really special,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to nurturing the next generation of footballers and building something sustainable and successful, both on and off the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson has remained involved in AFL circles this season as a regular contributor on racing and sporting radio station RSN 927.<\/p>\n<p>With a coach on-board, the focus for the Kangaroos and Thompson will switch to signing players for their senior, reserves and under-18 teams.<\/p>\n<p>Broadford already has several grades of netball teams competing in the Northern league and also fields junior football teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE first piece of the puzzle for Broadford Football Netball Club&#8217;s anticipated entry into the Bendigo Football Netball League in 2026 is in place following the announcement of former AFL Hawthorn and North Melbourne star Nathan Thompson as senior coach.
