MORE than 280 people attended the 13th annual Heathcote International Short Film Festival last weekend and plans are already underway for an even bigger event next year.<\/p>\n

Friday evening saw the popular Picnic and Popcorn event, and on Saturday a gala dinner, as attendees watched a rich selection of short films from all over the world.<\/p>\n

“The organising committee were thrilled with both the quality and number of entries submitted this year,” said committee member Duncan McGann.<\/p>\n

“We received seventy-four submissions ranging across a spectrum from comedy to tragedy.<\/p>\n

“The committee then whittled this down to the 12 films shown on each night of the event.<\/p>\n

“The submissions came from far and wide, including films from Nigeria, Spain, The Netherlands, and of course from our home-grown filmmakers.<\/p>\n

“Many of the films selected have won awards in their home country and enjoyed their Australian premier at the Heathcote festival.<\/p>\n

“There were also many entries this year from emerging filmmakers, seeking to grow their skills and exposure.”<\/p>\n

Mr McGann said the committee was pleased to have so many entries from emerging artists.<\/p>\n

“Festivals like this provide a platform for them to hone their craft,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We were privileged to host young directors Lousie Dickins (Wise Words) and Kiko Wayne Jr. (People Like You) who both produced challenging films dealing with different forms of discrimination.<\/p>\n

“It was lovely to see them engage with the audience to discuss their craft.”<\/p>\n

Mr McGann praised the spirit of the Heathcote community.<\/p>\n

“As ever, the generosity of the Heathcote business community was acknowledged and much appreciated,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Without our sponsors the festival would simply not be able to run.”<\/p>\n

With this year’s festival concluded, planning begins for an even bigger festival for next year.<\/p>\n
