COMMUTERS can expect to face delays of up to five minutes for the next twenty weeks or so on a stretch of the McIvor Highway approaching the Farmers Arms Hotel in Junortoun, as new turning lanes are installed at the risky Popes Road intersection nearby.<\/p>\n

Crews will widen the Highway at the crossroads and install left and right turning lanes to make it safer and easier for drivers to turn into Popes Road.<\/p>\n

There will also be new safety barriers constructed to reduce the chance of run-off-road collisions, new streetlights to make the intersection more visible and an upgraded bus stop.<\/p>\n

Workers will be on site from 7am to 6pm weekdays and during construction lane closures and reduced speeds will be required at times.<\/p>\n

The McIvor Highway is one of Bendigo’s busiest roads, linking Heathcote and Axedale with Bendigo.<\/p>\n

Premier and Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said this is the third intersection to be upgraded along a three-kilometre stretch of the Highway, costing $23.4 million in total.<\/p>\n

“These upgrades will reduce the risk of collisions on one of Bendigo’s busiest roads,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We’re reminding everyone travelling along McIvor Highway near the Popes Road intersection in Junortoun to be aware that crews will be working in the area and to make safe driving choices for the safety of workers and other drivers.”<\/p>\n

The current works are part of Transport Victoria’s Various Rural Intersection Upgrades program.<\/p>\n
