WHILE Christmas may bring festive foods and special treats to kitchen tables, it can be a hazardous time for animals.<\/p>\n

To ensure celebrations stay merry, the RSPCA is reminding families of the risks that can present across the holiday period and how they can keep their furry loved ones safe.<\/p>\n

“Traditional Christmas treats, like fruitcake, pudding, chocolate and alcohol can be toxic to pets,\u201d RSPCA Victoria director of veterinary services Dr Melissa Meehan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCooked bones from turkey or ham can easily splinter and cause damage to the throat and intestines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pet owners are also advised to avoid feeding animals processed meats or barbecue offcuts as they are high in fat and can lead to pancreatitis.<\/p>\n

Festive plants and flowers including poinsettias, mistletoe, aloe vera, holly and lilies are also a danger.<\/p>\n

The RSPCA recommends giving a long-lasting snack to pets instead and keeping them away from plants to avoid an emergency trip to the vet.<\/p>\n

Glass, metal and hard plastic Christmas decorations capable of cutting paws or causing internal injuries if swallowed can present a risk for pets.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Christmas tree can also look like a giant scratching post or climbing frame for our cats, so make sure it is tightly secured,\u201d RSPCA Victoria senior animal care manager Nadia Peiris said.<\/p>\n

The RSPCA also recommends people have a safe space for animals to retreat to if they get overwhelmed with large groups of people or meeting new faces.<\/p>\n
