{"id":102192,"date":"2026-01-18T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=102192"},"modified":"2026-01-14T20:12:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T09:12:44","slug":"from-the-office-of-roland-rocchiccioli-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/living\/from-the-office-of-roland-rocchiccioli-2\/","title":{"rendered":"from the office of ROLAND ROCCHICCIOLI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>THE Prime Minister is to be commended for his decision to call a Royal Commission into anti-Semitism and the consequences of the Bondi massacre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It would be wrong and regrettable to construe the decision as a personal humiliation. Definitively, it demonstrates Mr. Albanese\u2019s abiding concern for our Australian Jewish community \u2014 indeed all communities \u2014 who are subjected to any construct of racism or ethnic discrimination. Racism is the scrouge of modern society.<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, we are confronting a significant cultural and identity dilemma. For too long we have allowed unintentional racism to flourish with barely a consequential thought. With alacrity we have repeated the seemingly harmless joke about the Irishman \u201cwalking into a bar\u201d; or Moshe the Jew, or Paddy the Welshman, or Giuseppe the Italian \u2014 or the \u201cwhomever\u201d. While they are not innately racist they categorically serve to reinforce stereotypical views; they suggest a tacit acceptance \u2014 a subconscious permission to be \u201cunintentionally racist\u201d. Axiomatically, the massacre on Bondi beach cannot be categorised so simplistically; it is more religiously nuanced; more profoundly sinister; however, it does form part of the essential core crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Religious fundamentalism is a growing phenomenon \u2014 a curse affecting every Australian and which has been part of this country\u2019s zeitgeist since 1788. Irish Catholics were persecuted. Government employment advertisements, 1950s, carried a discriminatory caution: \u201cCatholics and Jews need not apply\u201d. Religiously incompatible neighbours did not speak. Mixed marriages were a vexed conundrum. Farcically, a Catholic bridesmaid at a Protestant wedding was forced to wait at the church door.<\/p>\n<p>During the reign of Elizabeth I \u2014 and England\u2019s years of religious tension \u2014it was High Treason for a Catholic priest to enter England. Religious zealots collected information and tracked-down priests. Those aiding-and-abetting the papists were punished. Captured priests were imprisoned, tortured, and killed.<\/p>\n<p>Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cMerchant of Venice\u201d is a singularly nasty play. The denouement \u2014 Shylock\u2019s crushing penalty of a forced conversion to Christianity \u2014 sits uncomfortably with modern audiences; consequently, there is a universally enlightened hesitancy to perform the work.<\/p>\n<p>The ethnic savagery which has enveloped and contaminated this Nation must be halted. It is incumbent on each of us to be part of the solution \u2014 regardless! Social prophylaxis \u2014 walking-by and expecting others to solve the problem \u2014 does nothing to eradicate the wicked problems. We must \u2014 through education and persistence \u2014 seek to restore our discarded social mores; to dictate a respect for our symbols and institutions; to incapacitate the capacity for, and be less tolerant of, egregious behaviour which is incompatible with the majority; and to require our Australian law to punish harshly \u2014 without fear or favour \u2014 those who would destroy our way-of-life.<\/p>\n<p>Indubitably, religion \u2014 despite its potential for good \u2014 is problematic. While the tenets are sound, in the hands of distorted fundamentalists they become a treacherous weapon. The rampant emergence of judgemental Pentecostalism is reason for disquiet. That neo-Nazi adherents have flourished despite strident authority resistance suggests an unacceptable permissiveness.<\/p>\n<p>We must \u2014 as a Nation \u2014 become more vigilant; more stridently determined to make Australia a better place; to vigorously eradicate the hatred which covertly pollutes our lives.
