MEMBERS of the Initiating Committee for Heathcote’s 175th Anniversary celebrations have been busy trying to contact as many groups as possible to garner interest in becoming involved.<\/p>\n
The committee met last week to discuss progress.<\/p>\n
“Although 2028 might seem a fair way off, it takes time to organise events, apply for grants et cetera,” said Heathcote McIvor Historical Society member Ralph Watkins.<\/p>\n
“We would love to see the whole town involved.<\/p>\n
“This is something that belongs to everyone, no matter how long they have lived in Heathcote.”<\/p>\n
Mr Watkins and Jim McHarg recently attended the monthly HCCB lunch where they spoke to representatives from community groups and asked if they would be interested in hosting an event.<\/p>\n
“We were well received at the lunch where we introduced the 175th Anniversary concept to garner support,” said Mr McHarg.<\/p>\n
“We asked those present to put it to their groups to consider if they would like to be involved.<\/p>\n
“There are many other groups in the town, and they would all be welcome to be a part of the celebrations.”<\/p>\n
Research officer\/museum curator of the Heathcote Historic Society Elizabeth Murfitt attended the recent Advance Heathcote AGM to outline the committee’s objectives.<\/p>\n
“I also received a positive response, and I am hoping people will make contact in the coming weeks to register further interest,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I am available at the HMHS office every Wednesday morning from 10.30am if anyone would like to call in and discuss their ideas.”<\/p>\n
Among suggestions received so far are to embrace the longest main street concept, incorporate the Valley of Liquidambers for an event and a pilgrimage to the cemetery to pay homage to antecedents.<\/p>\n
“We welcome any ideas and suggestions from groups and individuals,” said Mr Watkins.<\/p>\n
“Ideally, we would like to have groups contact us as soon as possible to allow more time for planning.”<\/p>\n
The committee will meet again on 1 April at 10.30am at the Historical Society building. Everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
