THE adventure of a lifetime will begin for two local men when they join a convoy of teams in Shitbox Rally, Australia’s largest independently run fundraiser for Cancer Council.<\/p>\n

As Team Gorgeous Georgios, Jarod and Ken Puxley will drive from Mildura to Townsville, beginning on 19 June.<\/p>\n

Shitbox Rallies are a challenge to drive cars worth $1500 or less across some of Australia’s toughest roads to raise money for Cancer Research. Each team needs to raise a minimum of $5000 to participate.<\/p>\n

The Watering Hole will hold Rockin for a Reason tomorrow night, Saturday 28 March, to support the team. There will be food and drink, live music from Vino Sapiens in the garden and prizes to be won.<\/p>\n

“We are really glad we can support Jarod and Ken,” said The Watering Hole co-owner, Joan Stammers.<\/p>\n

“They are setting out to achieve something for a great cause, and I hope everyone in Heathcote gets behind them.”<\/p>\n

Trade teacher Jarod Puxley and carpenter Ken Puxley were inspired to join the fundraising event after losing close friend George in 2023.<\/p>\n

“George was a man who spent his life telling anyone who’d listen that he wasn’t long for this world,” said Jarod Puxley.<\/p>\n

“None of us ever really entertained the idea that one day he wouldn’t be around to say it anymore.<\/p>\n

“He was a larger-than-life character who despite his tough bikie exterior and grumpy old man facade spent most of his time helping people without a second thought.<\/p>\n

“He was a unique character, one of which we don’t expect to encounter again. They’re just too rare.<\/p>\n

“The rally is something we’d both thought about doing before but never really committed to.<\/p>\n

“After we lost George, I decided that we had a reason, more than ever, to bite the bullet and sign up.<\/p>\n

“We bought a Falcon wagon in a horrible green colour, reminiscent of the family wagon in the movie National Lampoons Vacation and so, the theme was set.<\/p>\n

“It’s had the wood panelling treatment and a luggage rack added. Hopefully that will get a few laughs from anyone seeing it drive past.”<\/p>\n

Founder and CEO of Box Rallies James Freeman lost both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other.<\/p>\n

“Shitbox Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts,” said Mr Freeman.<\/p>\n

“This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary.<\/p>\n

“Wrapped up in this seven-day epic adventure are the Flinders Ranges, the Birdsville Track and the Gulf of Carpentaria all before reaching the finish line in Townsville. We depart Mildura and the mighty Murray River on our trek north.<\/p>\n

“We hit the dirt on day one and watch the terrain change dramatically each day.<\/p>\n

“This rally breaks all previous percentages for the amount of unsealed roads taken at a very healthy 70 per cent.<\/p>\n

“Teams not only pull together to help each other through the challenges of the rally, but also help and support each other through openness, mateship and camaraderie from people that have gone through similar hardships with their own cancer stories.”<\/p>\n
