Photo: Sandra James.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I met people I hadn&#8217;t met before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They came from different backgrounds and places and all enjoyed mixing together and sharing stories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parishioner and volunteer Mario Azzapardi initially approached Fr Ferwerda with the idea for the soup kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought it was a great idea and, together with other volunteers got on board,&#8221; said Fr Ferwerda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The initiative offers a meal and a social opportunity for the Heathcote community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2026\/06\/Soupkitchen3_69257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sandra Kirby and Bev Sharpe joined visitors to the new soup kitchen last week. Photo: Sandra James.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First through the doors were good friends Sandra Kirby and Bev Sharpe. &#8220;What a wonderful idea,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>said Kirby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who doesn&#8217;t need a bowl of delicious soup on a winter&#8217;s day?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sharpe said the community spirit in the room was wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is great for everyone and the volunteers are fantastic,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Heathcote Soup Kitchen will open every Thursday during the winter months from 12pm to 2pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HEATHCOTE Soup Kitchen opened its doors last week, welcoming anyone in the community in need of a nourishing meal or some social interaction.
