HEATHCOTE McIvor Historical Society held a special community meeting last week for the purpose of forming a steering committee for proposed 175th town anniversary celebrations in 2028.<\/p>\n
The meeting was chaired by Ralph Watkins from the historical society and attended by representatives from 12 groups and several interested citizens.<\/p>\n
Watkins gave a brief history of the Mechanics’ Institute of Heathcote and of the present building in which the meeting was held, still standing since 1900.<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of preserving and honouring the town’s history.<\/p>\n
“In January 1900, members of the Mechanics Institute decided they needed a new building,” said Watkins.<\/p>\n
“The old one was in a declining state. Snakes were even found in the cellar.<\/p>\n
“Estimates for construction were between \u00a3500 to \u00a3700, beyond the means of the institute.<\/p>\n
“Discussions went on for months and there was even a deputation to the Premier seeking funds, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
“A building fund was established and at the Agricultural Show a highly successful stall included a shooting gallery.<\/p>\n
“But real success was achieved when women came on board.<\/p>\n
“The Ladies’ Committee of the institute organised events like euchre parties and a five-day bazaar, an extravaganza of entertainment.<\/p>\n
“There were queues in the street all week. Those committed women raised an amazing \u00a3100 in just five days, and the vision of a new Mechanics’ Institute became reality.<\/p>\n
“What an achievement by those community-focused and productive folk, and what a legacy they left the community.”<\/p>\n
Watkins thanked those attending the meeting and outlined its purpose.<\/p>\n
“Just like those amazing citizens in 1900, it would be great if we could honour our town with a celebration,” he said.<\/p>\n
“One suggestion we received for a proposed theme is Longest Street, Longest Celebration.<\/p>\n
“We would be honouring heritage and paying homage to the town’s pioneers, connecting the community and inviting various local organisations to showcase Heathcote’s rich tapestry.”<\/p>\n
Each attendee read out a suggestion for possible celebrations, including gold panning, sports events, a light show, back to schools, an anniversary ball, a longest lunch, tours of historic sites, and commemorative wine.<\/p>\n
At the end of the meeting, six people expressed interest in being part of the steering committee.<\/p>\n
“It is an excellent start,” said Watkins.<\/p>\n
“We will be holding monthly meetings, and I am sure there will be more interest as the anniversary date draws near.”<\/p>\n
