{"id":86755,"date":"2022-12-02T06:46:47","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T19:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=86755"},"modified":"2022-12-02T07:03:50","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T20:03:50","slug":"saints-prepare-for-big-season-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/sport\/saints-prepare-for-big-season-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Saints prepare for big season 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHILE many of us might be thinking of relaxing over the festive break, now is the perfect time to get on board for Heathcote Football Netball Club\u2019s 2023 journey.<\/p>\n<p>Both the footy team and senior netballers are holding pre-season trials in the next few days and senior coach Andrew Saladino said the Saints were ready to take the next step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing forward with the list we have and guys we\u2019ve brought into the club, finals is the expectation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout putting too much pressure on the guys I think people are now expecting the Heathcote footy club will be back playing finals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To get the seniors into the post-season for the first time since 2013, Saladino said it\u2019ll take more than just on-field strength.<\/p>\n<p>He said positivity across Heathcote FNC, from the change rooms, to the social club, is one of the Saints\u2019 biggest strengths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really good place to be around at the moment,\u201d Saladino said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got really good culture at the club and obviously off-field is just as important as on-field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take footy quite seriously, but footy is an outlet for some people and a place where everyone can get a break from their normal life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you come down to Heathcote we make it fun and enjoyable but also serious at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86757\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-86757\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/12\/PDW_5313-600x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The senior footballers came close to making the finals in season 2022, and second-year coach Andrew Saladino said expectations are high next time round. Photos: FILE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A Grade netball co-coach Brooke Bolton agreed, saying the feeling and positivity around the club was one of the Saints\u2019 best qualities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe club is moving in a really good direction,\u201d she said. \u201cEvery side at Heathcote last season did better than the year before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe committee is fantastic and they\u2019ve been super supportive and there\u2019s a really nice club environment going on at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe football gets around the netball when we have wins, and the same with netball supporting football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really exciting club to be at and it\u2019s nice to be somewhere that perhaps has been a little bit unsuccessful recently, but is starting to see that success and it means so much more to the club, community, players, and everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the senior footballers missing post-season action this year by one win, Saladino said hopes were high around the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe missed by a game, which I guess externally we probably exceeded expectations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternally it was a little bit disappointing in the end as we were sitting in the top five all year and then lost a couple of games late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost four games by a goal, so we were really competitive against some of the top sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing from two wins the previous year to seven was a big jump for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for going further in 2022, Saladino said the club had been recruiting well, but that didn\u2019t mean there weren\u2019t opportunities for locals to get a game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve brought in some really good players, some quality from around Melbourne and in the Riddle footy league,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we also have quite a fair few locals play in our senior\u2019s side. I\u2019m big on getting locals into the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously every club has to recruit a few outsiders, but I want to get back to a place where we do have a lot of local guys playing for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a number of locals playing in the senior side and about 15 in the reserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86759\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-86759\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/12\/PDW_5390-600x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Grade netball co-coach Brooke Bolton said the Saints are welcoming of all players.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, with four senior netball squads, Bolton said there was a lot of opportunity to run on court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of our players are retuning, which is great, but we defiantly still have some holes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do need some more players. At this stage we\u2019re probably lacking up either end, there\u2019s often a lot of mid-court players and you struggle a little bit for the defenders and shooters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of preparations for season 2023 football pre-season begins on Monday, 5 December at 5.30pm while senior netball try-outs will take place on Sunday, 4 December at 4pm.<\/p>\n<p>Both will take place at the Saint\u2019s home ground at Barrack Reserve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHILE many of us might be thinking of relaxing over the festive break, now is the perfect time to get on board for Heathcote Football Netball Club\u2019s 2023 journey.
