AUSTRALIAN cricket legend Belinda Clark, one of the greatest women\u2019s cricketers of all time, was honoured last week with the unveiling of a statue of her at the SCG.<\/p>\n
Clark becomes the first female cricketer to be immortalised in a statue anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n
She captained Australia\u2019s women\u2019s team for over a decade, won two World Cups and was the first cricketer – male or female – to knock a double century in a one-day game.<\/p>\n
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, former teammates and family were among the large crowd to gather for the unveiling before play on day two in the men\u2019s test between Australia and South Africa.<\/p>\n
The sculpture was created by NSW artist, Cathy Weiszmann.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never see myself as a lone ranger, as someone that\u2019s pioneered anything,\u201d Clarke said on SEN Test Cricket after the unveiling.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see myself as part of a group of people\u2026 I see myself as part of a tribe and that tribe\u2019s being recognised today.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s how I view it\u2026 there\u2019s a group of people working on a whole range of things.\u201d<\/p>\n
She described the shot she\u2019s playing as: \u201cessentially a back foot slash over mid-wicket\u2026 it\u2019s pretty adventurous\u201d.<\/p>\n
SEN Test Cricket\u2019s Rachael Haynes added it\u2019s a statue that could inspire countless girls and women.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really special as a player to walk into a ground like this, or even a fan\u2026 and the first thing when you walk through gate A of the members is Belinda,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that\u2019s pretty special, that wasn\u2019t the case as a young girl growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clark\u2019s statue is the 15th at the SCG and joins fellow women Betty Cuthbert and Marlene Matthews, former sprinters who are at the front of Allianz Stadium next door.<\/p>\n
