The men’s race played out quite differently, as a group of nine riders broke away from the peloton about two-thirds of the way through the race with Jayco AlUla speedster Callum Scotson and Ryan Cavanagh on Kinan Racing Team leading the charge.<\/p>\n
O’Brien unleashed with about 150 metres to go, leading out for his teammate Quick but edging him on the line to take the title.<\/p>\n
Taj Jones, riding with Israel Premier Tech, finished third.<\/p>\n
O’Brien, 24, was part of Australia’s bronze-medal winning outfit in the team pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n
He also finished second in the national road race in 2021.<\/p>\n
“I can’t believe it, hats off to Callum [Scotson], he was an absolute motorbike today,” O’Brien said.<\/p>\n
“We executed a good race together and I really wasn’t expecting to hang on to the finish line but it opened up on the corner and I somehow found the legs.”<\/p>\n
In the supporting races and grades Graeme Frislie on CCACHE x Par K\u00fcp claimed the Under 23 men\u2019s title and Lucinda Stewart riding for ARA Skip Capital the women\u2019s under 23 crown.<\/p>\n
Wil Holmes from ARA Skip Capital was first in the under 19 men, while Mackenzie Coupland of the Cycling Development Foundation took home the under 19 women\u2019s green, gold and white jersey.<\/p>\n
