{"id":88804,"date":"2023-04-09T04:57:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T18:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=88804"},"modified":"2023-04-04T13:14:51","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T03:14:51","slug":"gallery-lands-unique-womens-weekly-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/gallery-lands-unique-womens-weekly-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Gallery lands unique Women\u2019s Weekly exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE <em>Australian Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> will be celebrating a major milestone with a once-only exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery later this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly: 90 Years of an Australian Icon<\/em> will showcase the history of the magazine and Australian culture.<\/p>\n<p>Editor-in-chief of <em>The Weekly<\/em>, Nicole Byers, said she\u2019s thrilled to bring some of the magazine\u2019s best moments to the gallery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>90 Years of an Australian Icon<\/em> celebrates not only <em>The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> heritage of agenda-setting story-telling and trusted lifestyle and food content, it also explores how the brand has charted the changing lives of Australian women from 1933 to today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Curatorial manager at the gallery, Lauren Ellis, said the institution has built a relationship with the magazine through projects such as <em>Australiana: Designing a Nation<\/em>, currently on until 25 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth Bendigo Art Gallery and <em>Australian Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> are working in the contemporary Australian fashion space, and we have a lot of shared friends and colleagues,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne great example will be a knit-at-home pattern adapted from Jenny Kee\u2019s iconic <em>Blinky<\/em> jumper worn by Princess Diana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisitors can come and see Kee\u2019s original in <em>Australiana<\/em>, then one knitted from the magazine\u2019s pattern in <em>90 Years of an Australian Icon<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ellis said the two groups worked closely together to decide what to include.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have found some special items which highlight the magazine\u2019s place in Australian fashion history, as well as the creativity it inspired for everyday people at home, sewing, knitting, crafting, and cooking with humble materials,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also some inspiring stories of trailblazing women who worked at the magazine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They include Ita Buttrose, who, at 33, took over the reins of <em>The Weekly<\/em> in the 1970s as the youngest editor of the publication ever, and Dorothy Drain, who wrote articles from the Korean and Vietnam wars.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ellis said, though it sounds obvious, before the internet, women would save their copies of the magazine so they could refer back to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like younger people to see how magazines held worlds of information and inspiration in the pre-digital era,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s very hard to imagine today when you can instantaneously Google how to make icing, or buy cheap baby clothes at so many large stores, or get deluged with red carpet images on social media after every Hollywood awards night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having been in print since 1933, Ms Ellis said it is interesting to see how the magazine shows cultural changes over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Ita Buttrose\u2019s leadership, the magazine really began meeting the appetite of Australian women for editorial which engaged with challenging social issues,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can also observe the gradual expansion of beauty ideals. For many decades the pages of the magazine reflected an ideal of slim, white, young, glamorous women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see how this has begun to change with a broader range of women\u2019s lives reflected in the stories and images.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think what has remained consistent is the magazine\u2019s ability to blend fashion, escapism, news, useful tips and information, and practical resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly: 90 Years of an Australian Icon<\/em> will run at the Bendigo Art Gallery from 27 May to 27 August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Australian Women\u2019s Weekly will be celebrating a major milestone with a once-only exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery later this year.
