{"id":89784,"date":"2023-06-04T04:55:42","date_gmt":"2023-06-03T18:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=89784"},"modified":"2023-05-31T13:31:39","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T03:31:39","slug":"weekly-celebrates-90-years-with-gallery-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/weekly-celebrates-90-years-with-gallery-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly celebrates 90 years with Gallery exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new exhibition has opened at the Bendigo Art Gallery in partnership with <em>The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> to celebrate the publication\u2019s ninetieth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition showcases six garments worn by Australian women on recent front covers including the likes of Princess Mary, Delta Goodrem and Tina Arena.<\/p>\n<p>The publication\u2019s famous cookbooks are also highlighted, including a display of the enduring <em>Children\u2019s Birthday Cake Book<\/em> as well as vintage photos and front covers from the magazine\u2019s early years.<\/p>\n<p>Current editor Nicole Byers said the magazine had found a special place in Australian women\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started out of course as a brand for women, about women and that was quite unique at the time,\u201d she said. \u201c<em>The Weekly<\/em> has endured because it&#8217;s remained true to its core.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s telling stories you wouldn&#8217;t necessarily read in other papers or wouldn&#8217;t find in other forums, so it&#8217;s kept relevant for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byers said the idea of an exhibition was borne after looking back at the magazine\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 90th-anniversary kind of snuck up on us and we knew it was going to be an exciting year and we got looking into the archives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were throwing things up on our social platforms and could see how people engaged with them. So, we had the idea that we wanted to do an exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were a bit naive and didn&#8217;t realise exhibitions take quite a long time to pull together but we are really excited Bendigo Art Gallery could come on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exhibition curator Lauren Ellis said she found it challenging to put the show together, and it took a collaboration between Gallery staff and a team from <em>The Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> to pull it off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy its nature, a magazine is ephemeral and, obviously, <em>Women\u2019s Weekly<\/em> had lots of incredible memories and stories and fashion magazines history,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow to bring that to life in a physical gallery space was a conundrum we had to work through. <em>The Weekly <\/em>team have been really fantastic with assisting with research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, their fashion and style director had to contact some of the designers who have lent gowns to recent covers so we could really show the story of how <em>The Weekly<\/em> represents Australian fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly: 90 Years of an Australian Icon<\/em> exhibition is on show at the Bendigo Art Gallery until Sunday, 27 August and is free to attend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new exhibition has opened at the Bendigo Art Gallery in partnership with The Australian Women\u2019s Weekly to celebrate the publication\u2019s ninetieth birthday.
