THE First Nations artist commissioned to create a work that\u2019ll become a permanent fixture in the foyer of The Capital has been revealed.<\/p>\n
Announced last Saturday at an event marking the venue\u2019s 150th anniversary, Daikota Nelson was revealed to be the awardee of the $8000 commission.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have always had an interest in art,\u201d she said. \u201cGrowing up my passion has only grown.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am inspired by natural landscape and storytelling traditions, native flora and fauna, and the land we stand upon.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy artwork tells a unique story for the old and young generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Dja Dja Wurrung woman, Nelson\u2019s work has previously been on show in spaces like the Bendigo Visitor Centre.<\/p>\n
After first being announced in March, the search for an Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander creative to undertake the commission for The Capital\u2019s foyer first went through an expressions of interest process before shortlisted candidates were assessed by a judging panel.<\/p>\n
Bendigo Venues & Events manager Julie Amos said Nelson\u2019s submission stood out from a high-quality list of possibilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cHuge congratulations to Daikota for her concept, which blew the judges away,\u201d Ms Amos said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe concept encapsulates First Nations storytelling, culture and country, the history of the area and knowledge of The Capital\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe main theme for the proposed artwork depicts growth, acknowledging years of knowledge and sharing stories.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will be a striking contemporary artwork with a depiction of the rings of a tree to illustrate the passing of time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nelson\u2019s work is expected to be installed at The Capital by the end of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
