{"id":91253,"date":"2023-08-10T12:38:43","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T02:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=91253"},"modified":"2023-08-10T12:38:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T02:38:43","slug":"climate-tales-told-in-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/climate-tales-told-in-song\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate tales told in song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CENTRAL Victorian folk duo Valley Road are launching their latest single, <em>1982<\/em>, at Shiraz Republic at Cornella, north of Heathcote, on Sunday 13 August.<\/p>\n<p>Redesdale farmer and songwriter Marty McKenna said the tune reflected stories of drought, fire, and other events that happened in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up in the southeastern part of Australia in a farming community, the extreme events of that particular year are talked about often and have become a kind of folklore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fires, extreme dry and giant dust storms of that time still inform farming practices to this day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collective memories of farming through the &#8217;82 drought are vivid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McKenna grew up singing to the sheep on his family\u2019s farm, while band mate Rebecca Jane Howell honed her skills as a member of the Australian Girls Choir.<\/p>\n<p>The pair began performing together after Howell started an informal singing group at Kyneton in 2012, and they teamed up for a fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>Valley Road, along with Broken Creek Band who are also launching their new single, <em>The Gathering Wool<\/em>, is at Shiraz Republic on Sunday from 2pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CENTRAL Victorian folk duo Valley Road are launching their latest single, 1982, at Shiraz Republic at Cornella, north of Heathcote, on Sunday 13 August.
