HOLY Rosary students are on the road to safer cycling thanks to a donation from the Heathcote Lions Club this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Lions Club funds will compliment a major grant from the City of Greater Bendigo and ensure we achieve our goal to improve safety,\u201d said school principal Paul Dullard.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very grateful for their support and hope to acquire 20 bikes for the students and four adult bikes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want students to be more active and better skilled on two wheels.<\/p>\n
\u201cSix staff members are trained in bike education and will assist students to become more aware of road rules, develop their bike skills and make them safer as they ride to school.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bikes will be used in our sports program and during breaks as an alternative activity for students. Our school is situated right next to the O\u2019Keefe Rail Trail and we hope to utilise that as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast week we launched The Safest Way to Holy Rosary after engaging with the City of Greater Bendigo for the Safe Routes to School Program.\u201d<\/p>\n
The VicRoads initiative encourages municipalities and schools to collaborate to improve road safety, especially around drop off and pick up times.<\/p>\n
Mr Dullard also paid tribute to program sponsors Wheelhouse Bikes Kilmore.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have worked closely with\u00a0us to select\u00a0equipment and offer a discount price for each item as well as post sales service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Heathcote Lions Club members Lorraine and Greg Speirs presented Holy Rosery students with the money for the program on Monday.<\/p>\n
