{"id":91553,"date":"2023-09-01T04:46:36","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T18:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=91553"},"modified":"2023-09-01T09:24:14","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T23:24:14","slug":"sting-of-defeat-to-spur-a-graders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/sport\/sting-of-defeat-to-spur-a-graders\/","title":{"rendered":"Sting of defeat to spur A Graders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HEATHCOTE co-coach Brooke Bolton said the sting of defeat in an A Grade netball elimination final would be a key motivator going into next season.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints made a long-awaited return to the topflight play-offs by facing Mount Pleasant in last Sunday\u2019s elimination final on North Bendigo\u2019s court in Atkins Street.<\/p>\n<p>It had been one-all in the regular season but slow start in the final would prove costly for Heathcote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were a lot of nerves in the opening quarter, and Mounts was able to capitalise,\u201d Bolton said of a seven-goal deficit.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints won the second term, 10-8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were a couple of positional changes which worked for us, but also our passing through the court improved a lot,\u201d Bolton said.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints led 31-29 at a quarter to play, but in the last it was the Carine Comer-coached Blues who lifted their play to win the term, 14-7, and the match, 43-38.<\/p>\n<p>Bolton\u2019s play through mid-court was a highlight for Heathcote, as Ainsley Tupper continued her great form in the Blues line-up.<\/p>\n<p>Another key contributor for Heathcote was goalkeeper Jennifer Van Neutegem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of Jen\u2019s best matches of the season,\u201d said Bolton. \u201cShe had an impact in a lot of contests.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91555\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91555\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-91555\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2023\/08\/Heathcote_Mt-Pleasant_A-Grade_Netball-1-web-600x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meave Hogan\u2019s versatility was again on display, with the swing player stating in the defensive third.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Heathcote team jointly coached by Brooke Bolton and Kelsey Hayes marked the club\u2019s first A Grade final in 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKelsey and I are incredibly proud of what the girls have achieved,\u201d said Bolton. \u201cIt\u2019s taken a lot of work to be in the league\u2019s top five.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people at our club have put in plenty of effort, not just on the court, but off it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bolton said the memory of the elimination final would be a driving force throughout pre-season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA goal is to keep getting better, not just next season, but every season we play,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints\u2019 rising stars are shining on the netball court.<\/p>\n<p>In the 13 &amp; Under competition, Heathcote scored a 23-12 win against Leitchville Gunbower in the qualifying final.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints\u2019 17 &amp; Under team will aim to bounce back from a qualifying loss to Colbinabbin when they play Mount Pleasant in Sunday\u2019s first semi-final.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Grade<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heathcote 38 &#8211; Mount Pleasant 43<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>17 &amp; Under<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colbinabbin 42 &#8211; Heathcote 35<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>13 &amp; Under<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leitchville Gunbower 12 &#8211; Heathcote 23<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HEATHCOTE co-coach Brooke Bolton said the sting of defeat in an A Grade netball elimination final would be a key motivator going into next season.
