<\/p>\nNorth Bendigo is approximately 4.2 square kilometres and has six parks covering nearly 8.5 per cent of total area.<\/p>\n
The population in 2016 was 4046 and by the 2021 Census was recorded at 4277 showing growth of 5.7 per cent in the area during that time.<\/p>\n
North Bendigo is situated in the vicinity of Lake Weeroona and the railway loop which runs northwards to Inglewood.<\/p>\n
Its area includes the Australian Defence Industries north of the railway loop, and the Bendigo showgrounds.<\/p>\n
Chinese goldminers were active in this area since the mid-1850s, and in about 1865 they constructed the Chinese Masonic Hall known as the Joss House on Finn Street.<\/p>\n
The Hall has been restored by the National Trust and is on the Victorian Heritage Register.<\/p>\n
Part of North Bendigo was known as Emu Point, a name dating from the late 19th century when there was a large Chinese community based there.<\/p>\n
Much of the area was pitted with mining dumps, and North Bendigo was a mixture of working-class houses and industrial landscape.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of World War TWO an ordnance factory was opened, and after the war, mining land was levelled for housing.<\/p>\n
The Bendigo North school opened in 1873 was outgrown by the school population, and the Comet Hill school next to the showgrounds was opened in 1965, with a Catholic primary school opening on Eaglehawk Road in 1972.<\/p>\n
An example of 19th century survives in Weeroona Avenue in the form of the Bendigo gas works bulit in 1860 which are also on the Victorian Heritage Register.<\/p>\n
Australian Defence Industries which occupies the site of the former ordnance factory made aircraft, shipping and weapons components, as well as commercial products.<\/p>\n
Its workforce was approximately 3000 people and is now part of Thales Australia makers of the Bushmaster and other protected military vehicles.<\/p>\n
CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in North Bendigo is 20-29 years with households being primarily childless couples and young families likely to be repaying on average $1290 per month on mortgages.<\/p>\n
In general, people in North Bendigo work in a professional occupation.<\/p>\n
