FOLLOWING the competition season, Dragon City Roller Derby will be running come and try events in October to encourage people to take up the sport.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Captain of the Chiko Rollers, Bec Fisher, said the two come and try events will be on 1 and 11 October.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe first one is focussed on people who already have some skating skills and are interested in playing roller derby,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for them to come down, try out some of the basic skills that we are looking for, with the view to bring in to our Learn to Roller Derby program that is starting off in early October.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen we are also doing a come and try roller skating day which is part of This Girl Can Week, and so we\u2019ll be opening that for adults who have no skating experience or have some.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat will just be a bit of a fun session for people to come down and have a roll around and get to know us and think about whether they\u2019d maybe want to join us in the future.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The group has seen a lot of interest in the roller disco events they have been having about every six weeks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really fun blend of existing skaters from our club, friends, family, and people who love roller skating,\u201d Fisher said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have gear that people can borrow from us, or they can bring their own, and we just play some music, play some games, and just have a general fun night out.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Victorian derby competition, the Statewide Stampede, the Chiko Rollers came seventh out of 10 teams this season.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really exciting for us to field a team entirely from our club again this year, which we hadn\u2019t been able to do last year due to COVID,\u201d said Fisher.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMore than half of our team had never skated on our team before, so that was really exciting to have so many new members.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really inclusive sport, it has opportunities for all types of people and different skill sets within the one team.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
