PUBLIC libraries are often seen as valuable places in communities, potentially providing safe and supportive spaces, and information for more than just avid readers.<\/p>\n
Heathcote Library\u2019s hours were increased in 2021 following a survey of residents but some believe it\u2019s time for a further extension.<\/p>\n
The library is currently open four days each week: Tuesday 9am to 12pm, Thursday and Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturday 9am to 12pm.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe open hours have been set in line with population size and service demand, like visitations, borrowing and program attendance,\u201d said Elise Wright, coordinator of community based services with Goldfields Library Corporation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn late 2020, residents were surveyed on preferred open hours and, based on feedback, hours were increased in 2021, increasing Thursday to a full day and adding Tuesdays into the mix.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also increased the number of our weekly story time sessions this year. We now have a session on Thursday morning at 10.30am, along with our Friday 9.30am sessions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been wonderful to see these additional open hours embraced by the community over the past few years.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve also seen an increase in the number of people visiting the library to access our public computers and Wi-Fi, or just to meet and catch up with locals.\u201d<\/p>\n
While grateful for the increase in hours in 2021, some locals believe there is scope for a further increase as the population has grown.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe library provides an escape for many people,\u201d said regular attendee Linda Cornelisson. \u201cA respite from weather or day to day challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cActivities such as poetry and environmental workshops start at the library but often lead on to other things, providing valuable knowledge and connections.<\/p>\n
As a former teacher, Ms Cornelisson believes increased hours would be invaluable for homework and study support, especially for high school students.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn light of the growth in and around Heathcote in the last two years, perhaps it\u2019s time for a new survey.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
