THIS week we chat with dynamic local singer, songwriter and guitarist Bridie Lynas, who says there\u2019s a certain amount of vulnerability behind her \u201caggressive\u201d and \u201cblunt\u201d lyrical leanings.<\/p>\n

What initially motivated you to become a musician?<\/strong><\/p>\n From a very young age I was always singing. My mum got me singing lessons when I was 11. I sang for two years and then I took up guitar lessons to help accompany my voice. My mother also took me to lots of gigs and shows. I\u2019ve just always been surrounded by music and have always loved music, especially guitar.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n How would you describe your style and how did you develop it?<\/strong><\/p>\n My style now is 90s alt rock and grunge. It wasn\u2019t really intentional, but as I\u2019ve grown up and developed my style, I hear a 90s alt rock style of singing and songwriting. I think it comes from the music that I\u2019ve grown up with. My voice also naturally graduates to more of a rock style.<\/p>\n I used to watch Rage <\/em>on the TV when I was a kid and I remember seeing the music video of Epic<\/em> by Faith No More when I was about four years old. I was immediately captivated. I think that style of music composition and drumming is something that has stayed with me.<\/p>\n I also grew up listening to a lot of folk music, which was more lyrical based for me. That storytelling and reflective style of songwriting does come through in my own music. Some of my lyrics are almost aggressive and are definitely blunt, but there\u2019s vulnerability behind the anger. Establishing the imagery of that in my branding is something I\u2019m still working on.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Which other bands or musicians inspire you and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n So many bands, so many genres but, the few that stand out are Alanis Morissette, Limp Biscuit, Grouplove, Matt Maeson, Joan Jett, Pixies, and Violent Femmes. That\u2019s more for inspiration for my own songwriting and composition. I also heavily listen to hip hop music including Doja Cat, ASAP Ferg, J. Cole, Russ, and I love Mac Miller.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n What are some highlights or fond memories you have from your career so far?<\/p>\n Putting out three acoustic demos and getting some interest on SoundCloud would probably be a highlight. Performing my originals with Jared Healy (he plays electric guitar) has also been super fun. I\u2019m in the process of recording a single with a full band sound.<\/p>\n I\u2019m learning to really enjoy the process and planning of making my music happen. It’s very rewarding when I put a lot of energy into a project and I get to see it come to life.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
