The incident left her with nerve damage in her leg.<\/p>\n<p>Forster\u2019s rehabilitation remains ongoing, but the keen cyclist has returned to competition as a para-cyclist with a lower-leg impairment. Her journey has taken her to the top of the world.<\/p>\n<p>In one of her first races back, on local roads in Buninyong, Forster won the Australian championship in her category.<\/p>\n<p>In August, she represented Australia in track and road cycling at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>There, the 37-year-old became a world champion, winning the C5 scratch race on the velodrome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough year, but I love riding my bike, and when I couldn&#8217;t, it was pretty hard,\u201d Forster said after winning her national title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo feel like a bike racer again is probably one of the best feelings in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, for the first and possibly last time, the Ballarat East resident is preparing to defend her national title at home.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93052\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93052\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93052\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2023\/11\/555765607-j5c_6799a-copy-joshua-chadwick-auscycling-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The five-day festival of cycling includes racing in the CBD, Mount Helen, and Mount Buninyong, and it\u2019s all free!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2024 Federation University RoadNats Ballarat will be the last in the city\u2019s 18-year streak of hosting the national titles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been iconic having Nationals in Ballarat,\u201d said Forster, who is also the vice-president of Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s built up a legacy that means we have a very strong bike community here. You get a lot of locals who come along and support, people who might not necessarily ride themselves or follow cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The championships will run from 3 to 7 January, beginning with time trials at Federation University\u2019s Mount Helen campus.<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat\u2019s CBD will host the criterium races on Friday evening, where spectators can get up close to Australia\u2019s top cyclists as they fly along Sturt Street.<\/p>\n<p>On the weekend, the fan-favourite live site will return to Mount Buninyong after several years\u2019 absence.<\/p>\n<p>With food and drink, sponsor stalls and a big screen, it will be the best place to soak up the atmosphere of Ballarat\u2019s last road championships.<\/p>\n<p>Events are free to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit sad that Nationals is moving on, but we\u2019ll make the best of it and have a big final showdown,\u201d Forster said.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8211; <b><i>SPONSORED CONTENT <\/i><\/b><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT cyclist Alana Forster has had an up-and-down couple of years.
