I had a book and a half of poems that just sat on my computer for 23 years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cI just had a random conversation with some friends this year and said these poems are just going to die when I die. They said \u2018Well, why don\u2019t you get them out?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although reluctant to enter, he saw a competition closing the next day, the Lane Cove Literary Awards, and decided to submit a piece from years ago.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI thought, what\u2018s the point even submitting a poem? I\u2019m just going to waste 15 dollars because I\u2019m not going to win it,\u201d said Wallace. \u201cThen, alright, I\u2019ll do it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI had a poem, and it was too long, it exceeded the requirement limits. And so, then I went to the second poem and I sort of thought alright, I guess I\u2019ll use this one.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAnyway, then it got longlisted, shortlisted, and then it won.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ironically, the successful poem was about despair, titled <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Song is the Solitude<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI cried when she rang me,\u201d he said. \u201cI said, this just feels so stupid because I wrote this 20 years ago.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTo me, it was stupid, about what my life could have been, and a career could have been, that didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wallace said he is more focussed now his yoga and meditation teaching, but at one time an American publisher said he was an Australian poet to watch.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He said he does wonder sometimes what could have been.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRidiculously, I just threw a poem randomly in a comp and it wins.
