RECENT flooding and wild weather has seen large numbers of native animals disorientated and displaced.<\/p>\n
As a result rescue organisations have been busy collecting and caring for wildlife.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had calls to rescue kangaroos, reptiles, snakes, frogs and birds, lots of birds,\u201d said Sue Kirwan from Help for Wildlife.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe birds are mainly waterlogged or battered by strong wind. Recently we\u2019ve had more flying foxes than ever before.<\/p>\n
\u201cExtreme weather conditions and lack of food has seen them turning up in unexpected areas, away from their usual habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Kirwan said members of the public should be careful around injured wildlife as they can become aggressive when frightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should call for help with larger animals and never attempt to rescue flying foxes or snakes as they need to be attended to by trained people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd please be patient. Some of our volunteers have been stranded by the floods too, but we get there as quickly as we can.<\/p>\n
\u201cSmaller animals can be taken to a vet who will not charge and will care for them until carers can take over.\u201d<\/p>\n
Drivers should be careful, especially between dusk and dawn.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a lot of animals searching for food on the sides of the roads. The Northern and McIvor Highways are particular hot spots,\u201d said Ms Kirwan.<\/p>\n
\u201cSlow down and take a little extra care.\u201d<\/p>\n
